common questions

can I work and foster at the same time?

Yes – many foster carers work, especially those caring for school-age children. Your local team will talk through what’s practical based on the age and needs of any child you might care for.

how much money will I receive as a foster carer?

Foster carers in Wales receive a minimum weekly allowance of £208-£260 to help pay for everything the child needs, depending on the type of fostering and the age of the child. As well as a payment, benefits and discounts for you. Your local team will provide full details during your enquiry.

how long does the approval process take?

The assessment process typically takes around four to six months. It involves home visits, checks, references and training. Your social worker will guide you through every stage.

can I foster an age of child that fits with my family?

We’re the first port of call for all local children who need foster care – children of all ages. We will get to know you, and your household to find the best match.

what is the difference between foster wales and a private fostering agency?

Foster Wales is the national network of all 22 local authorities in Wales. When you foster with us, you foster direct with the decision-makers for the child, children living with you stay connected to their local community and your support comes from your local team.
